Reminiscent of resort-style living in Palm Springs, our Malvern Residence is an extensive renovation to a light-filled home with existing glass pitched atrium. With an eye to preserving the essence of the original architecture, our design crafted a contemporary version of the 1980s, filtered through a modernist glamour lens.
“It’s the architectural decade that some consider brash, but here it’s been celebrated and modernised in this 1980s home that’s always ready for a party” Clare Sartin - Elle Decoration UK

We are thrilled to be recognised as a finalist in the Belle Design Awards – Best Commercial Interior. Designed as part inner sanctum with elements of play and nostalgia, the Marquise Flagship Store is a space that encourages true appreciation for the intricacies of shopping for baby clothes. Porcelain pink textured plastered walls and calming feature lights are complimented by carefully placed pops of colour - cobalt blue wall features, tiled display plinths and a custom coloured acrylic ceiling feature that was inspired by the 1960s toy Playplax. This space provides a fresh take on nostalgic childhood memories, so appropriate to a brand that is nearly 90 years old.

When commencing work on our Elwood Residence, we were immediately drawn to the period detailing and grand scale of this stately Art Deco home. Previously serving as a reception hall (“Dickens Manor”), this historic space has now been transformed into a truly customised home that still honours it’s architectural heritage.

Working during COVID is a challenge for everyone and particularly here in Melbourne during stage 4 lockdown. We won’t let the distance keep us apart, so each of our team are busy working from home offices - keeping connected to clients and project teams with many phone chats and Zoom video calls.
The Doherty Design Studio website is being regularly updated with images from our building sites to view the beautiful craftsmanship of our designers and trades. In addition to the daily phone calls and virtual screen sharing for project development, our work in progress update is held each week online to keep the whole team connected. Plus a frequent virtual drink is welcomed on a Friday afternoon :)

We are honoured our MARQUISE Flagship store is a Finalist in Commercial Interior for the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2020.
This store was conceived as an inner sanctum with elements of play, nostalgia and room for true appreciation for the intricacies of shopping for baby clothes. The end result is both playful and nostalgic.
“The porthole gives a striking first impression.
You have to look inside don’t you, whatever age you are.”

We are so excited our MALVERN Residence has been recognised as a Finalist in The Design Files & Laminex Design Awards 2020.
“When Doherty Design Studio Director Mardi Doherty and Associate Niv Kelkar were tasked with the update of a 1980s home with a monolithic facade in Malvern, the timing was serendipitous. Having just returned from a trip to Palm Springs for Modernism Week, the award-winning designer was brimming with inspiration on how to revitalise the house’s tired interiors with glamour and colour, while respecting its architectural origins.”
Amelia Barnes for The Design Files - Thursday 16th April 2020
We are honoured our MALVERN Residence has been announced on the shortlist for Residential Design, in the Australian Interior Design Awards / AIDA in 2020
Reminiscent of resort-style living in Palm Springs, this spacious home with pitched glass atrium has been extensively renovated. Drawing from the building’s architectural heritage (originally designed by renowned architect Peter McIntyre), we crafted a contemporary version of this 1980s home, filtered through a modernist glamour lens.
Our sincere thanks to our trusting clients who let us add the disco back to this modern family home.

We are thrilled to be shortlisted for Residential Interior for, not one, but three of our projects in the Dulux Colour Awards 2020.
A different approach with colour was taken for each project to bring the features of each site to life.
Confident use of colour from the 1980s era was celebrated in our MALVERN project. Colour was kept at the fore in the retro-inspired interiors of our ST KILDA project. And finally, a calm colour palette connected the outdoors and celebrates earthy tones of our THORNTON country home.Images: MALVERN Residence, ST KILDA Residence, THORNTON Residence. We were really thrilled to win an award in the House & Garden Top 50 2019 for our THORNTON country home.
‘’With its soaring ceiling and vast walls of glass, this living room is at one with its rural Victorian location. The owners asked Doherty Design Studio and Detail 9 Architects to design a contemporary country retreat that was low maintenance and had a sense of calm. The tapered fireplace and pitched ceiling frame the view, while the textured furnishings and fittings around the fireplace ensure cosiness when the temperature drops.’’
We are excited to announce that our St Kilda Residence and Thornton Residence have been shortlisted in The Design Files inaugural awards.
The winner will be announced 19 September in Melbourne. Fingers crossed!
